Ytterbium oxide, namely ytterbium(III) oxide (Ytterbium oxide), molecular formula:Yb2O3Molecular weight:394.08。
Physical properties: White amorphous powder, slightly hygroscopic. Relative density9.17, melting point2346℃. Insoluble in water and cold acids, soluble in hot dilute acids.
Chemical properties: The oxidation states are divalent and trivalent. At room temperature, ytterbium can be slowly oxidized by air and water. Ytterbium oxide is a colorless powder that dissolves in acids to form colorless salts, such as ytterbium sulfate and ytterbium nitrate. Trivalent ytterbium ions are also colorless and paramagnetic, exhibiting a series of sharp absorption bands in the near-infrared spectral region, which can be used for the quantitative spectral analysis of ytterbium. Ytterbium chloride is reduced using hydrogen.(YbCl3。)A greenish-yellow ytterbium dichloride can be obtained.(YbCl2:)Divalent ytterbium ions are unstable in aqueous solutions.
Application areas: Used in phosphors, optical glass additives, and the electronics industry; primarily used in manufacturing magnetic bubble materials for computers, enabling magnetic bubble storage devices to feature high speed, large capacity, small size, and multifunctionality; also used in producing special alloys, dielectric ceramics, and specialty glass.
