Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda, NaHCO₃) can be used as an adsorbent for flue gas desulfurization. It removes acidic pollutants from flue gas through chemical adsorption, while also removing certain inorganic and organic trace substances through physical adsorption. In this process, fine sodium bicarbonate powder is directly sprayed into high-temperature flue gas. Under high temperature, sodium bicarbonate decomposes to produceSodium carbonate Na2CO3, H2O and CO2.

The newly generated sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) exhibits high reactivity at the moment of formation and can spontaneously undergo the following reactions with acidic pollutants in the flue gas.

Under normal conditions, the flue gas temperature ranges between 140 and 250 °C. Due to the high reactivity of sodium bicarbonate as an adsorbent, a slight excess of sodium bicarbonate (with a stoichiometric factor between 1.1 and 1.3) is typically sufficient.

In principle, sodium carbonate (Soda, Na2CO3) can also be used for flue gas desulfurization. The reactivity of sodium carbonate is slightly lower, but the process flow remains almost unchanged. This article will not further elaborate on sodium carbonate desulfurization.

Due to transportation and storage constraints, sodium bicarbonate raw material is typically in coarse granules (with a d50 value of approximately 200 microns). To achieve higher reactivity, the adsorbent must have a larger specific surface area. Therefore, before being injected into the flue gas duct, sodium bicarbonate must be ground to a certain fineness. For example, to remove SO2, the fineness of sodium bicarbonate must reach d90 < 20 µm. For HCl removal, only d90 < 35 µm is required. If the system operates correctly, over 95% of SO2 can be removed, and the removal rate of HCl can even reach 99%. The dry desulfurization process uses a pulverizer with an integrated classification system combined with a conveying fan to form a complete grinding and powder injection unit. The ground sodium bicarbonate fine powder exhibits a layered or porous structure, with uniform particle size and good dispersibility. It is then directly injected into the furnace or reaction tower through multiple nozzles in the form of solid ultrafine powder.
